Housewarming Gift in Dubai: Bread and Salt, and Which Loaf to Bring
Bread and salt have long been carried into new homes, from Finland and the Baltic states to Hungary and Germany. This is why, which of our loaves to take through the door, how to carry it and when to order so it reaches you before you set off.

A loaf of bread, with salt from your own kitchen, is a long-standing housewarming gift in several cultures, and in Dubai the easy way to bring one is to order it to your own address by the day before and carry it to the new home in a cloth. Our Country Sourdough Loaf at 25 AED is the plain choice and slices well for three to four days; the Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough at 30 AED brings dates, walnuts and a touch of honey. Checkout offers four windows, each three hours long: tomorrow 7–10 am, tomorrow 3–6 pm, the day after tomorrow 7–10 am, and next Saturday 9 am–12 pm. Delivery is 20 AED below 150 AED and free from 150 AED, with no minimum order.

Why is bread and salt a housewarming gift?
Because bread and salt have long been offered as a welcome, and in several countries they are exactly what you bring to a new home. Wikipedia's article on bread and salt, which we checked on 9 October 2026, describes them as offered to guests in a ceremony of welcome in cultures around the world:
- A new home. In Finland, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, bread and salt were traditionally given as a blessing for a new home. In Hungary, bringing them to a new house is a common folk custom for the household's well-being, and in Germany they are given on moving into a house, to wish prosperity.
- A welcome. Among the East Slavs, important or respected guests are presented with a loaf of bread and salt; the Russian word for hospitable, khlebosolny, literally means "bready-salty".
- A bond. In Arab culture the idea is not a welcome but the alliance made by eating together, and people say "there are bread and salt between us".
A St. Louis Jewish Light article from June 2024, checked the same day, adds honey: bread for a household that never goes hungry, salt for a life with flavour, honey for one with sweetness.
None of this needs a ceremony: a good loaf, salt from your own cupboard (we do not sell salt) and a few words at the door are enough.
Which loaf should you bring to a housewarming?
Bring a loaf that keeps for three or four days, such as the Country Sourdough Loaf at 25 AED, because the hosts are still unpacking. All five below keep at room temperature, so none needs a fridge that may not be running yet.
- Country Sourdough Loaf, 25 AED. Our signature round loaf, slow-fermented for over 24 hours. It handles soup, cheese and jam alike and slices well for three to four days; more in our country sourdough guide.
- Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough, 30 AED. Dates, toasted walnuts and a touch of honey, a nod to the honey custom above. It is not a sweet bread: it suits aged cheese or labneh, and the crumb stays soft for three to four days. It contains walnuts. More in our date bread guide.
- Multi-Seed Sourdough Loaf, 28 AED. Sunflower, pumpkin, flax, sesame and millet through the dough and on the crust; a loaf for tearing at the table, with three good days and a fourth that toasts well. See seeded sourdough in Dubai.
- Japanese Milk Bread Loaf, 18 AED. Faintly sweet and milky, and still genuinely soft on day three: the loaf for the first breakfast in the new kitchen. Our Japanese milk bread guide explains why it stays soft.
- Marble Cake Loaf, 35 AED. The sweet option and the neutral loaf, for a mixed table where tastes are unknown. It keeps three to four days at room temperature; see our marble cake guide.
Which bakes should you not bring to a housewarming?
Leave out anything that needs a fridge, and anything that must be eaten the day it arrives unless you visit that same evening.
- Sourdough Baguette, 15 AED, and the Croissant, 14 AED. Both are for eating the day they arrive, so bring them only to a visit that same evening.
- Sandwiches and the Granola Parfait with Greek Yogurt, 25 AED. Both go into the fridge on arrival, and a new fridge may not be running.
When should you order a housewarming loaf?
Order online by the day before the visit; there is no same-day delivery, and every order is baked for the day it is due.
- Evening visit: order the day before and choose tomorrow 3–6 pm, so the loaf reaches you that afternoon.
- Nobody home that afternoon: take the 7–10 am window on the day of the visit, or a morning window the day before it. The Country Sourdough Loaf, the Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough and the Marble Cake Loaf keep three to four days from the day they arrive, so they are still good to give, but each day they wait is a day less for the hosts.
- Saturday visit: the next Saturday 9 am–12 pm window brings the loaf that morning.
The earliest window is preselected, so check which is ticked before you pay. Orders placed after our evening cut-off are scheduled for the next baking day, and checkout shows the date. If the visit falls on a public holiday, take an earlier window: we cannot promise delivery on the public holiday days themselves.
For a housewarming in Abu Dhabi, the earliest delivery is 2 days after ordering, between 2 pm and 8 pm; our guide to bread delivery to Abu Dhabi covers which bakes suit that wait.
How should you carry bread to a new home?
Carry a crusty sourdough in a cotton or linen bread bag or a clean tea towel, and keep the Japanese Milk Bread Loaf and the Marble Cake Loaf whole and sealed. Keep a sourdough out of sealed plastic on the first day: a fresh loaf is still giving off moisture, and plastic turns the crust leathery by morning.
The hosts will not know how we keep each loaf, so pass it on at the door:
- Country Sourdough Loaf: cut side down on a wooden board, uncovered, for the first day, then a cloth bag or bread tin.
- Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough: a paper or linen bag on the counter, cut side down on a board.
- Multi-Seed Sourdough Loaf: cut side down on a board for two days, then a paper bag inside a cloth or a bread box.
- Japanese Milk Bread Loaf: whole, in a sealed bag or airtight tin, away from direct sun and air conditioning vents.
- Marble Cake Loaf: whole, in an airtight tin, with cling film pressed against any cut face.
None of them goes in the fridge, where bread stales fastest. Our guide on how to store bread in Dubai covers freezing and every other loaf.
What should you order if you are the one moving in?
A first-morning order to the new address: bakes that need no fridge, a map pin on your door and someone home to receive it.
- The pin. Checkout asks you to "Drop a pin at your exact door — UAE addresses can be tricky, so a map pin is how our driver reaches you fastest." Put the flat in the "Apartment, floor" line and any gate code in the notes for the baker.
- Someone at home. Fresh food needs a person, not a doorstep. We cannot replace fresh items left uncollected or unrefrigerated.
- No fridge yet. The Japanese Milk Bread Loaf (18 AED), the Country Sourdough Loaf (25 AED) and the Marble Cake Loaf (35 AED) all keep at room temperature. Together they come to 78 AED, or 98 AED with the 20 AED delivery fee: milk bread for the first breakfast, sourdough for the first dinner and something sweet for whoever helps with the boxes.
How can an agent or property manager bring bread to a handover?
Order to your own office the day before and bring the loaf to the keys handover yourself. Tick "Delivering to a company / business?" at checkout and enter the company name as reception knows it. Put the floor and office number in the "Apartment, floor" line and drop the map pin on the entrance a driver should use.
- Five handovers in the same few days: five Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough loaves at 30 AED come to exactly 150 AED, so delivery is free, and each keeps three to four days.
- Six handovers: six Country Sourdough Loaves at 25 AED also come to exactly 150 AED, with free delivery.
- One handover: one Country Sourdough Loaf is 25 AED plus 20 AED delivery, 45 AED in all.
For regular handovers, the quantities, delivery days, notice and pricing are agreed when you get in touch with us.
Which housewarming loaves contain nuts, sesame or dairy?
The Date, Walnut & Honey Sourdough contains walnuts, the Multi-Seed Sourdough Loaf carries sesame, the Japanese Milk Bread Loaf contains dairy and egg, and the Marble Cake Loaf is made with butter. That is not a full ingredient list for any of them, so a loaf is not safe for an allergy just because an ingredient is not named here. Ask the household about allergies before you choose.
Our kitchen handles wheat, gluten, eggs, dairy, nuts, peanuts, soy, sesame and seeds, and we cannot guarantee that any item is free from traces of these. Our product descriptions are not full ingredient lists, so if anyone has an allergy or intolerance, tell us before you order and we will tell you honestly whether we can serve them safely. The Country Sourdough Loaf is the plainest choice, but the kitchen statement applies to it too.
